Neil Mandsager, M.D., FACOG

Dr. Mandsager started Perinatal Center of Iowa, LLC, in 1993. Born in Cameroon (a country located in west-central Africa), he was raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, and attended Wartburg College. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed his OB-Gyn residency in Columbia, Mo., before spending four years in the U.S. Air Force. After that, Dr. Mandsager completed a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is currently board-certified in Obstetrics-Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Dr. Mandsager lives in Johnston with his wife and has five children. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, taking photographs and watercolor painting. Dr. Mandsager is also a board member for ChildVoice International, an organization seeking to restore the voices of Ugandan children silenced by war.


Joseph Hwang, M.D., FACOG

Dr. Hwang joined PCI in 2004. He spent much of his early life in Chicago, where he attended college and medical school at Loyola University Chicago. He then ventured to the east coast, where he completed his OB-Gyn residency at Georgetown University, followed by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Yale University. Dr. Hwang is board-certified in Obstetrics-Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Dr. Hwang has participated in several round-table discussions regarding the prevention of recurrent premature birth. He is also co-leading a study to prevent premature births through the Iowa Center for Translational and Clinical Research.

Dr. Hwang lives in Waukee with his wife and two daughters. Apart from work, he enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid photographer.

Perinatal Center of Iowa physicians assistant Amie Dawes

Amie Dawes, PA-C

Amie is a physician assistant with PCI. She earned her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University before attending Des Moines University’s Physician Assistant program. Amie is board-certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Perinatal Center of Iowa nurse practitioner Kate Wallce

Kate Wallace, ARNP

Kate is a nurse practitioner with PCI. She attended Central College and Grand View College before receiving her graduate nursing degree from the University of Kansas

Medical Center. She is board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Perinatal Center of Iowa certified prenatal counselor Cindy Johnson

Cindy Johnson, MS, CGC
Cindy is the genetĀ­ics counselor at PCI and the only certified prenatal genetics counselor working in Des Moines. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Hays State University before graduating from the University of North Texas with a Master of Science degree in Human Genetics. Cindy is a charter member of the American Board of Genetic Counseling and currently maintains her certification through that organization. She is also a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors.

Our dedicated team of sonographers specializes in high-risk obstetric ultrasounds. Our sonographers have the education, experience and expert knowledge of performing these diagnostic tests to give the most accurate results.

What is a perinatologist?

A perinatologist is an obstetrician/gynecologist who has completed several years of additional training in maternal and fetal complications of pregnancy (maternal-fetal medicine).

As perinatologists, Dr. Mandsager and Dr. Hwang provide:

  • Total prenatal care for patients with high-risk pregnancies
  • Consultation and recommendations for pregant patients under the care of another health care provider
  • Basic and advanced ultrasounds for pregnatn women
  • Genetic screening and prenatal diagonostic testing
  • Pre-conception counseling to women to assess overall health, pregnancy related risks and recommendations to optimize future pregnancies

Why is board-certification important?

Board-certification is a voluntary process which demonstrates a doctor’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medicine. Board-certification shows a physician’s voluntary participation in lifelong learning to keep their skills current, demonstration of their commitment to quality clinical outcomes, patient safety and a responsive, patient-centered practice.


PCI doctors are board-certified in both general Obstetrics/Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (Perinatology) and are Fellows of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
