Referral Process
If you have a patient who could benefit from the care of a maternal-fetal medicine specialist or other services the Perinatal Center of Iowa (PCI) offers, please contact us by calling (515) 643-6888 or
toll-free (877) 415-7447.
Thank you for considering PCI for your pregnant patients or those considering pregnancy.
Below are some of the circumstances and conditions for which patients may be referred to PCI:
- Advanced maternal age (over age 35 at time of delivery)
- Cardiac disease
- Known or newly diagnosed history of high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Preeclampsia (toxemia)
- Diabetes (both pre-gestational and gestational types)
- Infectious diseases (such as parvovirus, toxoplasmosis, hepatitis or HIV/AIDS)
- Renal/kidney disease
- An abnormal alpha fetoprotein (AFP) blood test (including the suspicion of a neural tube defect)
- Clotting abnormality (history of or thrombosis with current pregnancy or thrombophilia abnormality)
- Seizure disorder
- Abnormal quad or first-trimester screen (including the suspicion of a chromosomal abnormality such as Trisomy 21 [Down syndrome], Trisomy 13 or Trisomy 18)
- Multiple gestation
- Poor past obstetrical history (including previous preterm deliveries, preterm labor, preterm cervical dilatation, premature rupture of membranes or repetitive pregnancy loss)
- History of incompetent cervix
- Suspected abnormal fetal growth (both macrosomia or fetal growth restriction)
- Maternal lupus
- Red cell alloimmunization (Rh- mother sensitized to an Rh+ fetus)
- Need for invasive fetal testing/procedures such as:
- Fetal blood sampling/transfusion or other type of in-utero therapeutic procedure(s)
- Need for chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis (amnio) for maternal age or other factors
- Known/suspected fetal anomaly
- Need for genetic counseling services
- Need for antepartum fetal testing
