Comprehensive Obstetric A comprehensive obstetric ultrasound is performed between weeks 18-24 of pregnancy. In addition to assessing the same factors as a second-trimester ultrasound (fetal number and growth, amniotic fluid volume and fetal and placental positions), this exam will assess multiple genetic markers and includes a detailed assessment of fetal anatomy. Comprehensive ultrasounds are generally offered for:
PCI doctors and sonographers are specially trained and experienced to provide this high level of ultrasound. My regular OB doctor told me that I should have a Level II or a detailed ultrasound. What is this and where should I have it done? A detailed or Level II ultrasound is ordered when there is an increased risk of a problem with your baby. For example, a routine ultrasound has raised concerns there may be a problem or with a 35 year-old (or older) expecting mom. PCI believes that a detailed ultrasound should provide you with both a high quality and expanded sonographic evaluation of your baby, along with an interpretation by a physician with expanded knowledge of the ultrasound finding. PCI offers patients the high quality imaging, expanded evaluation and the expert knowledge to review the images. PCI doctors are in the office and are able to review these detailed ultrasounds with you at the time of your examination. If necessary, our physicians will perform the ultrasound, understanding that in some instances more information can be gained by a live hands-on evaluation. If an abnormality is identified, the doctor will explain in as much detail as possible the specifics of that abnormality and what it means for your baby. If additional testing is required, such as a genetic amniocentesis, it can be performed during the same visit. |
